In Genesis 18, Abraham and Sarah have three visitors. Remarkably, it is the LORD who appears to Abraham as the childless old man sits at the door of his tent in the heat of the day.
They said to [Abraham], “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “She is in the tent.” The LORD said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?” The LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.” (18:9-14)
Think about that last question. “Is anything too hard for the LORD?” In the beginning, he said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. He formed man from dust and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. He took a rib from the man’s side and made it into a woman. He opened the windows of the heavens and flooded the earth. He set his bow in the clouds as a sign of his covenant with Noah and every living creature of all flesh. He confused the language of mankind and dispersed them from Babel over the face of the earth. “Is anything too hard for the LORD?” Just 18 chapters into the Bible, we’ve already learned the answer to that question. Another 1,171 chapters follow to confirm the answer.
“I know that you can do all things,
and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.” (Job 42:2)
“Ah, Lord GOD! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.” (Jer 32:17)
“Who then can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matt 19:25-26)
“For nothing will be impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37)
Those statements are worth meditating upon and carrying with us throughout the day because this is the God who hears our prayers, the Father in heaven who has promised to never leave us or forsake us.
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Heb 4:16)
Because nothing is too hard for the LORD.
