The Majestic and Mindful Son of Man

O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth! (Psa 8:1)

Our world is full of majestic things and places. When we describe something as “majestic,” we have the lofty, the extraordinary in mind. Majestic places inspire awe and wonder in our hearts. When we stand at the base of a 14,000’ mountain or stretch to see the bottom of a 6,000’ canyon, words like “grandeur” and “majesty” naturally come to mind. We don’t stand in such places and marvel at ourselves. We’re made to feel small in the shadow of the majestic, and rightly so.

But more majestic than any waterfall, rainforest, seashore, or sunrise is the name of the Creator behind it all. Just listen to the way David describes him in Psalm 8:

You have set your glory above the heavens…

…your heavens, the work of your fingers…

…the moon and the stars, which you have set in place…

When he looked at the majestic handiwork of the Creator whose name is infinitely majestic in all the earth, one question dominated David’s thoughts:

What is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?

The Creator is majestic, yes, beyond our wildest imaginations, but he is also mindful. Did you hear the heartbeat of David’s question? “You care.” The majestic Lord of heaven and earth cares. For me. For you. Over and over again, he is described as a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, and nowhere is the entire vista on any clearer display than in the sacrifice of his own Son.

For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. It has been testified somewhere,

“What is man, that you are mindful of him,
or the son of man, that you care for him?
You made him for a little while lower than the angels;
you have crowned him with glory and honor,
putting everything in subjection under his feet.”

Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. (Heb 2:5-9)

Majestic.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. (John 1:1-3)

Mindful.

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)

The majestic and mindful Son of Man, crowned with glory and honor.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Let’s praise him for his creative majesty. Let’s thank him for being graciously mindful of us. Let’s live for the One who tasted death for everyone.

O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Happy Lord’s day.
