Are You Thirsty?

“A Psalm of David, When He Was in the Wilderness of Judah.” That bit of context is significant in Psalm 63. The Judean wilderness is harsh territory–scarce food, even scarcer water. But notice what David wrote in Psalm 63:5:

My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food,
and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips…

How could anyone say such a thing in the desert? It all depends upon the source of the satisfaction:

O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
beholding your power and glory.
Because your steadfast love is better than life,
my lips will praise you. (Psa 63:1-3)

Many woke up this morning to a desolate wasteland of the soul. They feel isolated and hopeless. They’re wondering what the point of it all is. They’ve trudged from one happiness-mirage to another and repeatedly ended up with handfuls of sand. They’re bitter, calloused, and pessimistic.

If that’s you today, you need to know that your Creator can make water flow in the dry stream beds of the most parched soul. He’s done it over and over again. Real transformation and abundant satisfaction are freely available. Here’s the question: Are you thirsty? Not just casually thirsty, looking for refreshment on your own terms, but soul-thirsty; thirsty to the point of being desperate–ready and eager to “cling” to God (Psa 63:8) as the greatest treasure, the most satisfying reality in the universe?

Whomever you are, the gracious Giver of living water knows, cares, and is willing to refresh you.

Come thirsty.

Come thirsty and you won’t be disappointed. The water he gives becomes a spring of the soul, welling up to eternal life.
