Even 2,000 years ago, people had a hard time imagining what it must have been like to be the mother of Jesus. What an amazing privilege! What an incredible blessing!
In Luke 11, as the multitudes following Jesus were increasing, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and exclaimed, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” Jesus’ response? “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” (Luke 11:27-28).
He did something similar in Luke 7.
“I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John (the Baptist). Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” (Luke 7:28)
The mission of Jesus was so much greater than one generation, one branch of one family tree, or even one nation. John the Baptist was a great man. Mary was a profoundly blessed woman. But listen to the words of Jesus.
“The one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than John.”
“Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”
This is not meaningless history from an irrelevant era. Your Creator stepped into space and time, interacted with willing people, and changed the course of human history so that you, your children, and all who are far off–everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself–might be blessed.
Even today. Even you. Blessed are those who hear Jesus and walk with him.
